Private Sector

The largest urban school districts are the size of Fortune 500 companies. For example, with a $20 billion budget, 140,000 employees and more than 1,200 facilities, the New York City Department of Education is larger than Eastman Kodak, Sun Microsystems or Continental Airlines. As with any large company, a balanced budget, well-maintained facilities and productive employees are crucial to success. But in a school district, success is measured not by profit or loss but by student achievement.

By bringing private-sector best practices and a corporate sense of urgency and accountability to a school district, Fellows from the private sector do not just increase effectiveness of district operations, but ultimately impact student achievement. For example, by identifying areas of inefficiency, money is saved that can then be used to benefit students, like buying new textbooks or increasing teacher salaries.
