Successful applicants to The Broad Superintendents Academy are accomplished professionals who have demonstrated track records of leadership. Applicants should have at least 15 years of professional experience.
1. Professional Background
|
| We are interested in leaders with a variety of professional backgrounds: |
Government:
|
- Senior national, state, and local government executives with significant operational responsibility and broad general management experiences.
|
Private and Social Sectors:
|
- Senior executives who have directly managed complex businesses or business units with revenues in excess of $250M
|
Military:
|
- Senior military officers (O-6 and above), recently retired or anticipating retirement in the next two years; command experience strongly preferred
|
Education
|
- Education leaders (including individuals who have already made a transition to education leadership from another profession) who are within 2 years of becoming the superintendent of a large urban district.
Successful candidates will usually fall into one of the following four categories:
Cabinet-Level Executives (currently serving in the cabinet of a large urban district)
- Qualified positions include: Chief Academic Officer, Chief Operation Officer, Regional Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary/Middle/High School, Chief of Staff, or Deputy Superintendent
- Individuals will typically report directly to the district superintendent
Superintendents (currently serving as superintendent of a midsize district)
- District must have enrollment greater than 9,000 students and a demographically diverse student population
- District student achievement results must show positive growth for two consecutive years
Charter School Leaders
- Current CEOs or COOs of a charter management organization with multiple school sites and a positive record of student achievement
Higher Education
- Presidents and cabinet level administrators of respected colleges and universities

2. Organizational leadership:
|
- Superb analytical and problem-solving skills
- High level of energy, determination and perseverance to act as an agent of change in a demanding organization
|
3. Interpersonal leadership:
|
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
- Exceptional ability to manage complex political relationships and work well with a diverse set of communities, management styles and personalities
|
In addition, candidates should have expertise in at least one of the following areas:
1. Management
Includes leadership development, organizational structure, internal communication, prioritizing and pacing, change management, teamwork and collaboration and capacity building |
2. Operations
Includes human resources, human capital management, finance and budgeting, facilities, performance management systems, information systems management and other operations services |
3. Instructional alignment
Includes standards, curriculum, instruction, assessment, equity and access, student support services, professional development and program effectiveness |
4. Stakeholder engagement
Includes communication, alliance development, governance/board relations, labor relations, philanthropic and institutional partnership, family and community engagement, and constituent service |
