EDMOND HEATLEY
The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2008
Superintendent
Clayton County Public Schools, Ga.
Retired Master Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps
“My leadership as a superintendent is based on my personal philosophy: a fair break for every child. All students can learn. No matter what happens, in the forefront of every decision I make, I ask myself, ‘What is in the best interest of ALL students?’ Students in urban settings do not always receive the benefit of this type of educational vision, and it is key to transforming the ineffective school systems in our country.”
In July 2009, Edmond Heatley was appointed superintendent of the Clayton County (GA) School District which serves 31,200 students in nearly 60 schools. Heatley previously served as superintendent of the Chino Valley Unified School District in California where the achievement gap has closed by more than 35 points district-wide, and the number of schools scoring over 900 on California’s Academic Performance Index has more than doubled, from two to five. Prior to leading the Chino Valley district, Heatley served as associate superintendent for personnel for the Oceanside Unified School District in California, where he increased the number of No Child Left Behind compliant/highly qualified teachers by 50 percent and increased the number of teachers certified to teach English language learners by 60 percent. He also served as assistant superintendent for educational services for the Grant Joint Union High School District in California. Prior to transitioning to public education, Heatley spent more than 14 years on active duty and another seven years as a reservist in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of master sergeant. He has a bachelor’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Southern Illinois University, a master’s degree in special education from Old Dominion University, a master’s degree in administration and leadership from California State University, Fresno, and a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California. Heatley is a graduate of the 2008 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
