MARCIA LYLES
The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2006
Superintendent
Christina School District, Del.
“In the education profession today we are all grappling with the crises of achievement gaps, accountability and access—and the issues are magnified in an urban setting. While we will undoubtedly continue to have wave after wave of reforms, it is clear that strong leadership is increasingly needed to foster and nurture an environment in which change is embraced, collaboration among leadership is facilitated, and the belief in the ability and necessity to educate all our children prevails.”
In July 2009, Marcia Lyles was appointed superintendent of Christina Public Schools, Delaware's largest public school system, with over 17,000 students and 2,000 employees. Lyles previously served as deputy chancellor for teaching and learning for the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE), the largest K-12 public education system in the country with over 1 million students in more than 1,400 schools. She previously served the department as regional superintendent for region 8 (Brooklyn). In this role, she was responsible for leading the instructional learning division for four geographic regions of the NYCDOE, with 13 local instructional superintendents and 80,000 students in 150 elementary and secondary schools. Prior to the reorganization of the NYCDOE, Lyles served as superintendent for New York City’s Community School District 16, a K-8 district with 9,000 students in 15 schools, and as deputy superintendent for the high school division, with 47,000 students in 27 schools. Earlier in her career, she served as a high school teacher, assistant principal and principal. Lyles has a bachelor’s degree in English from Hunter College, a master’s degree in English from New York University and a doctorate in educational administration from Columbia University. Lyles is a graduate of the 2006 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
