YVONNE BRANDON

The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2006
Superintendent
Richmond Public Schools, Va.

“As a product of an urban public school system in Birmingham, Ala., I was prepared for the challenges of the future. A cadre of devoted instructors taught me to take risks, to have high expectations, to view adversity as motivation, to apply skills to all aspects of my life, and to continue to learn. The memory of those who touched my life during my public education experience propelled me to become an educator. Throughout my career, I have been preparing to lead a school district through education, work experience, and continuous professional development. I welcome the opportunity to change a public school system into a dynamic, transformational, successful system as an urban superintendent.”

In January 2009, Yvonne Brandon was appointed superintendent of Richmond Public Schools in Virgina, a district with 51,000 students in 54 schools.  Brandon had served as interim superintendent since August 2008.  Brandon also held the position of deputy superintendent and associate superintendent in Richmond. As associate superintendent she was responsible for K-12 core academics, career and technical education, computer-based education, health and physical education, music, arts, humanities, Title 1, Head Start, pre-school, media services, testing, research and evaluation, adult education, special education and professional development. Brandon has held several leadership positions in the Richmond district, including middle school assistant principal, middle school principal, and director of instruction. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., a master’s of education in guidance counseling from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va., and a doctorate in education supervision and administration from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  Brandon is a graduate of the 2006 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
