ANGELA BASS

The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2005
Area Superintendent
San Diego Unified School District

“Public education is one of the most important civil rights issues in American history. Teaching our children to become competent and coherent thinkers, readers, writers and speakers is the only viable way to achieve social justice. We need a new generation of leaders who love children and dream of leaving a legacy of greater opportunities and a more inclusive society.”

In August 2010, Angela Bass was appointed as area superintendent for the San Diego Unified School District, the second largest district in California serving nearly 132,000 students. Previously, Bass served as superintendent of instruction for the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, a collaboration between the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Unified School District that serves nearly 17,000 students in six schools. Bass has also served as executive director of the Baldrige Center in San Diego Unified School District. In this role, she oversaw training efforts for teachers district-wide and also designed a strategic plan to reform the district. Prior to this role, Bass served the district as an instructional leader and was responsible for a learning community of 20 schools, 45 administrators, 600 teachers and approximately 15,000 students. During her 25-year career in San Diego, Bass also served as a classroom teacher, staff developer, resource teacher, curriculum writer, vice principal, principal and mentor principal. Bass has a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from San Francisco State University, a master’s degree in educational leadership from United States International University, and she is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at the University of San Diego.  Bass is a graduate of the 2005 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
