JAMES QUEZON HAMMOND

The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2010
Superintendent
Ontario-Montclair School District, Calif.

“Students in the United States, particularly the children in our urban schools, deserve a world class education. Never has it been more important for school leaders in America to ensure that our educational programs and services are making students ready to compete in a global society. Superintendents can no longer afford to be good managers, but must be effective leaders with courage and savvy that can bring all stake holders towards a student-centered mission.”

James Quezon Hammond was recently appointed as superintendent for Ontario-Montclair School District, serving approximately 24,000 students. Hammond previously served as superintendent for Davis Unified School District where he collaboratively worked with his staff and community to pass local tax measures that have preserved programs and services that continue to make Davis Unified School District one the higher performing school district in the state of California. Prior to his role as superintendent in Davis, Hammond served as superintendent of schools for the Tukwila School District near Seattle, Washington. Under his leadership, Tukwila received local, state and national distinction as a school district for implementing research-based programs to improve student achievement; for developing collaborative partnerships to improve student learning with the community, government agencies and foundations; and for responding to the needs of a culturally, ethnically and economically diverse student population. The Tukwila Community School Collaboration was given the National Award for Excellence by the Community Schools Coalition and was recognized on Capital Hill. He holds bachelor’s degrees in political science and secondary education from Saint Martin’s College; a master’s degree in curriculum, instruction and administration from Gonzaga University; and a doctorate in education from Washington State University.  Hammond is a member of the 2010 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
