NANCY MCGINLEY
The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2002
Superintendent
Charleston County School District, S.C.
“Large cities are vibrant and stimulating places to live. The culture, intellectual resources and diversity of cities are powerful magnets. The challenge is to make our cities safe and nurturing places for our children to grow and learn. I believe that we can and must do a better job of educating inner-city children.”
In April 2007, Nancy McGinley was appointed superintendent of the Charleston County School District in South Carolina, a district with more than 48,500 students in 80 schools. Previously, McGinley served as chief academic officer for the district. Prior to this position, she served as the chief executive officer of the Philadelphia Education Fund, an independent, non-profit affiliate of the national Public Education Network that is dedicated to improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth in the city’s schools. She also serves on the national board of the Cross City Campaign for Urban School Renewal. Prior to joining the Fund, McGinley was director for leadership initiatives at Greater Philadelphia First, an organization focused on improving education and economic opportunities in the region. Previous positions include teacher, central office administrator in The School District of Philadelphia, principal of Abington Junior High School, the largest junior high in the Pennsylvania, and principal of Philadelphia’s Pepper Middle School. McGinley is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences, including the American Education Research Association, the National Middle School Association, the Education Trust and the Public Education Network. She has a bachelor’s degree in physical education and history from California State University, Hayward; and a master’s degree in education administration and a doctorate in administration from Temple University. She also has a superintendent’s letter of eligibility from the University of Pennsylvania. McGinley is a graduate of the 2002 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
