In August 2008, Randolph Bynum was appointed associate superintendent for high schools, for Atlanta Public Schools, a district with over 49,000 students in 103 schools. Previously, Bynum served as chief academic officer for the Charleston County School District in South Carolina, a district with over 48,500 students in 80 schools. He has also served as area assistant superintendent in the Cobb County School District, the second largest district in Georgia with over 106,000 students in 113 schools. In this role, Bynum oversaw 17 schools, over 19,000 students, 1,500 staff members, and a $120 million budget. He has also served as principal, assistant principal, and teacher. In addition, Bynum served for eight years in the United States Army, where his last assignment was Battalion Executive Officer for the 369th Signal Battalion in Fort Gordon, Georgia. As Battalion Executive Officer, he was responsible for more than 1,000 soldiers. Bynum holds a Bachelor of Science in Intermediate Education from Gardner-Webb College and a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from the State University of West Georgia. Bynum is a graduate of the 2007 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
