GARTH HARRIES
The Broad Superintendents Academy Class of 2009
Assistant Superintendent, Portfolio and Performance Management
New Haven Public Schools, CT
“Given the staggering scope of the achievement gap and the importance of education to our national future, our public school students, teachers, and principals all deserve the very best district leadership possible. I am honored to be part of the Broad Academy, and humbled to expand my role in that leadership.”
In June 2009, Garth Harries was appointed assistant superintendent for portfolio and performance management in New Haven Public Schools in Connecticut. Previously, Harries was chief executive for portfolio development at the New York City Department of Education, where he oversaw the creation and implementation of new opportunities and choices for students and families, including new Department of Education public schools, new charter schools, and Career and Technical Education programs. Harries also served as chief executive officer of the Office of New Schools, now part of the Office of Portfolio Development, creating 269 new small secondary schools and 63 charter schools between 2003 and 2008. New York City’s work in small school development has transformed educational access for underserved students across the city, offering new options to replace high schools plagued with graduate rates averaging less than 40 percent. Prior to his role as CEO, Harries served as chief operating officer of the Office of New Schools and as project manager in the Department’s Chief of Staff’s Office where he focused on cross-functional and cross-department strategy, prioritization and implementation. In addition, Harries was a consultant with McKinsey & Company for three years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in ethics, politics and economics from Yale University and a juris doctorate degree from Stanford Law School. Harries is a graduate of the 2009 class of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
